According to a new report, Samsung Electronics sold more smartphones with LCD panels than those with OLED displays technology last year. This is intriguing given the company's reputation for producing OLED panels.
Smartphones with LCD displays, on the other hand, are often less expensive than their OLED counterparts. According to an Omdia article (via BusinessKorea), the key reason for this is the South Korean tech giant's decision to use LCD panels for its entry-level handsets in order to save money. For those who are unaware, the continuing chip scarcity has resulted in higher pricing for chips and related supplies. As a result, the prices of cellphones in various sectors have risen.
Samsung Electronics shipped approximately 135.8 million LCD smartphones, while its OLED models sold 135.1 million units. Looking at shipment figures from the previous year, we can see that LCD smartphone shipments increased by an impressive 41 percent, while OLED device shipments decreased by around 15 percent. However, the brand's profitability rose as LCD handset shipments soared. The company's LCD smartphone sales revenue increased by approximately 4.23 trillion Won last year (roughly 3.4 billion US Dollars).
This was a staggering 740 percent rise over the same time period the prior year. Since 2010, the firm has been a key role in the rise of OLED technology in the phone industry, and it has been a well-known participant in this space. However, while OLED technology has grown in popularity in recent years, analysts believe that it will begin to decline in 2022.
