Motorola smartphone sales increased by 131 percent year over year (YoY) in 2021.

According to a market research organisation, Motorola became the third-largest smartphone brand in the United States in 2021, collecting roughly 10% of the overall market. With a 58 percent market share, iPhone maker Apple dominated the US market, while Samsung came in second with a 22 percent market share. In 2021, the Lenovo-owned smartphone brand had a 131 percent year-over-year (YoY) increase in smartphone shipments. It came in second place in the US for smartphones under $400 (approximately Rs.). Motorola entered the top three spots in the US smartphone market for the first time this year.

Motorola has grown to become the third-largest smartphone OEM (original equipment manufacturer) brand in the United States, according to Counterpoint Research's latest Market Pulse Service study. According to the research, Motorola's sales increased by 131% year over year in 2021, giving them a 10% share of the US smartphone market. As previously said, Apple topped the market with a 58 percent share, followed by Samsung in second place with a 22 percent share. In the premium area, Apple and Samsung remained the top sellers, while Motorola came in second in the $400 (approximately Rs. 30,300) and below pricing segment in the United States.

Motorola was the largest handset OEM in the United States in 2008, during the age of feature phones. However, this is the first time the company has cracked the top three in the smartphone market in the United States.

The anticipated exit of LG from the smartphone industry is thought to be a big factor in Motorola's success. LG announced the closure of its non-profitable mobile sector last year, following $4.5 billion in losses over nearly six years (roughly Rs. 33,010 crore). According to the research, Motorola stepped in to fill the hole left by LG by becoming the third largest smartphone manufacturer in the United States.

Motorola's success, according to the Counterpoint research, is due to its sub-$300 (approximately Rs. 22,700) smartphone portfolio, which includes the Moto G Stylus, Moto G Power, and Moto G Pure.

Motorola increased its market share in US prepaid channels like Verizon Prepaid and Metro by T-Mobile to 28 percent, according to Counterpoint. The market research agency also predicts that the company will expand in the future years. Motorola's growth is likely to be fueled by a wave of affordable foldable phones as the US subscriber base moves to 5G.
