Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), said in a tweet on Saturday that he is giving "serious thought" to creating a new social media platform.

Musk was replying to a Twitter user's inquiry about whether he would consider creating a social media network based on an open source algorithm that prioritised free expression and minimised misinformation.

Musk, a frequent Twitter user, has recently criticised the social media network and its restrictions. He claims that the firm is hurting democracy by violating free speech norms.

His remark comes a day after he posted a Twitter poll asking people if they thought Twitter upheld the idea of free expression, to which more than 70% responded "no."

"The results of this survey will have far-reaching effects. Please use caution before voting "On Friday, he stated.

If Musk decides to create a new platform, he will be joining a growing portfolio of technology companies that are positioning themselves as champions of free speech and hope to attract users who feel their views are suppressed on platforms such as Twitter (TWTR.N), Meta Platform's (FB.O) Facebook, and Alphabet's (GOOGL.O) YouTube.

So far, no company has come close to matching the scope and popularity of the major platforms, including Donald Trump's Truth Social, Twitter challengers Gettr and Parler, and video site Rumble.
