  • Apple may eventually enable users to toggle dark mode on specific websites.
  • Users may be able to access a certain website in Dark mode at all times.
  • With iOS 13, Apple introduced Dark Mode for iPhone and iPad.

According to references uncovered in open-source WebKit code, Safari users may soon be able to utilise dark mode on specific websites. Apple appears to be working on a forthcoming feature that will add a Dark mode user choice for individual websites. The new option, identified by 9to5Mac, is referred to in the GitHub-hosted WebKit source as "overriding the default color-scheme with a per-website choice."

This should allow users to always see a certain website in Dark mode, even if the system's Light mode is active.

Developers have adjusted their app interfaces to reflect the system setting or allow users to override it since Apple launched Dark mode for iPhone and iPad with iOS 13.

The new per-website choice in Safari would expand this option to surfing sites, as well as allow users to rectify sites that do not show properly in either Light or Dark modes.

Apple is working on another option to disable modal popups on certain websites visited in Safari, in addition to the per-website display setting. Modal popups, which sometimes resemble system alarms, must be dismissed by hitting a Cancel or other button. According to MacRumors, Apple is also working on a new API to control the cookie consent procedure used by many websites.

The new WebKit capabilities are labelled 'TBA,' or to be announced, so it's unknown if they'll be accessible in Safari via future iOS 15 and macOS 12 updates or later this year when the new operating system versions are published.
