According to a claim from 9to5Mac citing an unnamed person with knowledge of Apple's intentions, Apple is working on a "Mac Studio" gadget that appears to be a hybrid between a Mac Pro and a Mac mini.
The gadget will be "in addition" to the predicted Mac mini and Mac Pro, but will be principally based on the Mac mini. It will have "far more powerful hardware," and two versions are in the works. One machine will employ the same M1 Max chip released in the 2021 MacBook Pro models, while the other will feature a more powerful Apple silicon chip than the M1 Max.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman earlier mentioned a new Mac Pro with a smaller chassis to be marketed alongside the larger-sized Mac Pro, and it appears that the "Mac Studio" might be this smaller-sized Mac Pro.
According to Gurman, the smaller Mac Pro would feature up to 40 CPU cores and up to 128 GPU cores.
The Mac Studio is internally known as the codename J375, and 9to5Mac reports that, while the name may change, it is intended at professional users and will be marketed with a 7K "Apple Studio Display" that Apple is also working on.
