  • All ongoing dispute between WiLAN and Apple has now been resolved.
  • Previously, a US appeals court reversed a 2018 judgement in favour of WiLAN. WiLAN charges firms that exploit its intellectual property.

WiLAN said on Tuesday that it has reached a patent licence deal with Apple and resolved all remaining litigations, only weeks after the iPhone manufacturer won a patent fight with the business over wireless technology.

Following a 2020 retrial, Apple persuaded a US appeals court to overturn a jury's $85 million (roughly Rs. 650 crore) award to Canadian patent-licensing company WiLAN. Apple had sought the Federal Circuit to overturn the verdict on a number of reasons, including issues with the WiLAN expert's testimony.

In 2014, Apple filed a lawsuit against Quarterhill's WiLAN, claiming that it infringed on patents relating to wireless network capacity allocation. WiLAN alleged that the use of the LTE wireless technology in the iPhone 5 and 6 models infringed on its patents.

WiLAN's major business is to acquire intellectual property and then charge fees to firms who use it.

The most recent deal involves the resolution and dismissal of all lawsuits in the United States, Canada, and Germany between WiLAN, its subsidiary Polaris, and Apple. The agreement's terms, however, were not made public.
