  • The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 might be the first handset to use this technology.
  • The iPhone 14 Pro is expected to include a twin hole-punch design.
  • Apple has rejected Samsung's existing UPC technology.

According to a recent report, the iPhone 15 Pro (tentative name) might use under panel camera (UPC) technology. Apple is said to be working on a twin hole-punch arrangement for the rumoured iPhone 14 Pro, which is slated to be introduced later this year. This is a departure from the existing notch design used by Apple in the iPhone 13 lineup to house the TrueDepth Camera system for Face ID, selfies, and video chats.

According to a new storey from The Elec, Samsung Display is collaborating with OTI Lumionics to create a new UPC technology. Samsung might introduce it first on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 before making its way to the Apple iPhone 15 Pro in late 2023. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, which is expected to be released later this year, may use the Galaxy Z Fold 3's current UPC technology. The current UPC technology employs the laser drilling method, which Apple is said to have rejected.

According to reports, OTI Lumionics has created a novel organic cathode patterning material (CPM) that allows "microscopic transparent windows to be opened in the cathode and OLED pixel layers." This is said to make the display totally transparent, allowing Apple to place its FaceID sensors beneath the screen. The usage of this new UPC technology might result in the iPhone 15 Pro's display being fully notch and cut-out free.

The screen sizes of the iPhone 14 series were purportedly unveiled recently. The iPhone 14 is expected to have a 6.06-inch flexible OLED screen, while the iPhone 14 Pro is expected to have a 6.06-inch flexible OLED LTPO screen. The iPhone 14 Max is expected to have a 6.68-inch flexible OLED screen, while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to have a 6.68-inch OLED LTPO screen. Furthermore, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are said to utilise a new pill-shaped hole punch cutout instead of the display notch.
