HIGHLIGHTS

  • According to the Counterpoint research, Qualcomm may still be the market leader.
  • MediaTek has grown in prominence in the sub-$400 (about Rs. 30,000) market.
  • Qualcomm remains the industry leader in high-end smartphone SoCs.
According to reports, MediaTek has surpassed Qualcomm as the leading provider of semiconductor chipsets for Android devices in the United States. According to IDC's most recent data, MediaTek controlled more than 50% of the market share in Q4 2021, exceeding the typically dominant Qualcomm. According to a Counterpoint research, Qualcomm maintains its market dominance with a 55 percent market share, followed by MediaTek. Furthermore, MediaTek is said to be increasing market share with the introduction of its Dimensity chipsets, most recently the Dimensity 8000, Dimensity 8100, and Dimensity 1300SoCs.

According to an IDC analysis obtained by PCMag, MediaTek has eclipsed Qualcomm as the leading provider of semiconductor chipsets for Android devices. According to the research, the Taiwanese chip maker would control more than half of the Android smartphone market in the United States by the fourth quarter of 2021. During the same time frame, Qualcomm purportedly held a 47 percent market share.

However, according to The Verge, the IDC research includes somewhat different estimates for MediaTek and Qualcomm's market share in the United States. The former has a market share of 48.1 percent, while the latter has a market share of 43.9 percent.

Another discrepancy in the proportion of market share for both MediaTek and Qualcomm comes from a Counterpoint research, which The Verge highlighted. According to the survey, the US-based semiconductor maker held a 55 percent share of the Android smartphone market in the US, while MediaTek held only a 37 percent stake. It might indicate that Qualcomm continues to dominate the Android smartphone market.

According to IDC's analysis, MediaTek took the lead due to its domination in the sub-$400 (approximately Rs. 30,000) category of Android devices. According to reports, this is mostly due to the popularity of smartphones like as the Moto G Pure, Samsung Galaxy A12, Samsung Galaxy A32, and T-Mobile Revvl V+. According to IDC, most smartphones costing more than $400 use Qualcomm or Google chipsets.

With the recent announcement of its MediaTek Dimensity 8000, Dimensity 8100, and Dimensity 1300 SoCs, MediaTek hopes to take a larger share of the high-end Android market sector. The first two are scaled-down versions of the Dimensity 9000 SoC, however they will be produced on TSMC's 5nm technology rather than 4nm. The Dimensity 1300 SoC was unveiled as the successor to the Dimensity 1200 SoC from last year. All three chipsets are expected to make their smartphone debut in the first quarter of 2022.
