Sony revealed in a blog post showcasing the company's latest PS VR2 headgear that the new headset was inspired by the design of the PS5 system. While the console has flat edges intended for placing on a level surface, the PS VR2 headset, like the rounded edges of the DualSense controller and the Pulse 3D headset, has a rounded form since it is supposed to have continual human contact.
Sony claims that it included input from the initial PS VR headset's ergonomics, such as weight balance and an adjustable headband, into the design of its sequel. Likewise, the adjustable scope and stereo headphone jack positioning have not been changed to provide a more familiar feel. Meanwhile, Sony has incorporated additional features such as a lens adjustment slider that allows users to optimise their headset vision by matching the lens distance between their eyes.
The next PS VR2 headset will also include a new built-in motor for headgear feedback, which Sony claims would allow it to provide a smaller design than its predecessor. The PS VR2 headset will also include a redesigned vent design that will be situated between the top and front surface of the scope to improve airflow while keeping the lens from fogging up while playing.
Some of these characteristics were initially presented in January during Sony's CES 2022 briefing. The PS VR2 will include 4K OLED HDR displays (2,000x2,040 pixels per eye), a 110-degree field of vision (FoV), and a refresh rate of 90-120Hz. The PS VR2 headset will have eye-tracking for more natural interaction and power efficiency, since the headset will only depict what the user is looking at. It will include four cameras for monitoring headsets and controllers, as well as IR cameras for eye tracking. The PS VR2 headset features a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer, and an infrared proximity sensor.
Sony claims that PS VR2 development kits have already been distributed to game developers, implying that the headgear's debut would be accompanied by the release of games that take use of the improved hardware on the PS VR2 headset. That makes perfect sense. What good is new gaming technology if there are no games to play with it? Sony revealed Horizon Call of the Mountain for PlayStation VR2 at CES 2022.
As previously stated, Sony has yet to announce price information for the PS VR2 headset and PS VR2 Sense controller, as well as when they will be available to customers.
