HIGHLIGHTS
- The CPU/GPU performance of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series falls short of that of the iPhone 11.
- The Galaxy S22 is equipped with Samsung's newest Exynos 2200 CPU and RDNA 2-based Eclipse 920 graphics.
- Meanwhile, the iPhone 11 is powered by the A13 Bionic chipset, which is two years old.
It's that time of year when we compare the best Android phones versus the most recent iPhones on the market and wait for the predictable. Yes, the A15 Bionic on the iPhone 13 is quicker than the Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 on the Samsung Galaxy S22. That is to be anticipated, but when comparing the Samsung Galaxy S22 to previous iPhones, the Exynos 2200 performs much worse. So we have the two-year-old iPhone 11 vs the Samsung Galaxy S22, the latest and finest Android phone, where the Exynos 2200 takes some beating.
The Exynos 2200 was tested against a slew of chipsets and benchmark results were created, rating the chipsets in order of performance, and the findings were both expected and unexpected. As predicted, Samsung's Exynos 2200 performed admirably in the benchmarks, outperforming nearly every chip but a handful, including the A13 Bionic. If you missed it, the A13 Bionic chip debuted with the iPhone 11 and eventually found its way to the iPhone SE 2.
However, despite having an RDNA2-based GPU, the Exynos 2200 within the Galaxy S22 couldn't match the GPU capabilities of a two-year-old A13 Bionic-powered iPhone 11. In several GPU benchmarks, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the past three generations of Apple's A-series CPUs topped the lists.
Even in CPU testing, the A13 Bionic outperforms the Galaxy S22's Exynos 2200 in a number of scenarios. In the Geekbench 5.1 benchmark, the Exynos 2200 within the Galaxy S22+ achieved a single-core score of 1,069, while the A13 Bionic inside the iPhone 11 achieved a single-core score of 1,226. Meanwhile, in terms of multi-core performance, the Exynos 2200 edges out the A13 Bionic. The Exynos 2200 had a multi-core score of 3,287, while the A13 Bionic received a score of 3,279.
According to the benchmarks, the Exynos 2200 is yet another letdown, and Snapdragon-powered models appear to be a better alternative than Exynos variants. The Exynos 2200 generates a lot of heat due to poor thermal management, and the RDNA2 design doesn't assist much with graphics performance. Benchmarks do not always accurately reflect real-world performance. The Galaxy S22 series, on the other hand, comes with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset rather than the Exynos 2200, which is a silver lining for Samsung fans in India. The flagships are now available for pre-order throughout the nation, with sales beginning on March 11th.
