According to an internal document received by MacRumors from a reputable source, Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers will soon be able to repair Face ID on the iPhone XS and newer without having to replace the entire handset.
Apple has announced that authorised technicians will soon have access to a new TrueDepth Camera service component that includes all Face ID and front camera modules, enabling for same-unit repairs. Apple stated that the change will assist to minimise the amount of whole-unit repairs conducted, as part of the company's commitment to reducing its devices' carbon impact.
Customers may find that same-unit Face ID fixes are less expensive than whole-unit replacements, although pricing information was not included in the message.
Apple launched Face ID on the iPhone X in 2017, however that handset appears to be excluded from the TrueDepth system's new same-unit repair process. The new service component will be accessible for iPhone XS and later models.
Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers will be able to utilise the Apple Service Toolkit diagnostic tool to decide whether a same-unit Face ID repair should be performed rather than a whole-unit replacement or a "iPhone Rear System" repair. According to Apple, supporting paperwork and training will be made available at a later date.
