The iPhone 13 is nearing the end of its life cycle, but we're already anticipating the iPhone 14. Why? There have been numerous rumours about the upcoming device, including what it will look like and what features it will include. In other words, while the phone may surprise us, we may have a good idea of what it will look like in the end.

If you bought an iPhone 12, you might not be interested in what the iPhone 13 has to offer. If you replace your phone every few years, the iPhone 14 may be more important to you. We'll keep you updated as we learn more about the upcoming phone. Everything you need to know is right here.

Design of the iPhone 14

The iPhone 12 received a major redesign, and while Apple typically keeps a design in place for three years, it may deviate from that trend. The iPhone 14 is expected to be a slight redesign, at least in some ways, compared to the iPhone 13. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the iPhone 14 will feature an entirely new design. We've heard a lot of rumours about the device's notch. Earlier rumours suggested that the iPhone would have a pill-shaped cutout for the front-facing camera and Face ID sensors, but new rumours indicate that there will be two cutouts. A mockup created by YouTuber "the Hacker 34" depicts what this could look like.

According to leaker Jon Prosser, at least one iPhone 14 model will have a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera in place of the notch. It's unclear whether that look will be exclusive to "Pro" models or also available on standard models. According to Prosser, the Pro models will include Face ID technology built into the display. Mark Gurman recently confirmed that rumour, claiming that some iPhone 14 models will feature a hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera.

This is backed up by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes Apple may finally do away with the notch entirely, at least on higher-end Pro models.

The back of the phone may also be slightly different. According to Prosser's leak, the Pro models will feature a flush camera array, which will eliminate the large camera bump seen on recent iPhone models. Around the edges, the phone could get round volume buttons similar to those found on the iPhone 4. There will almost certainly still be a Lightning port on the bottom of the device.

Other minor changes are possible. Apple has been experimenting with colours more recently, and the new device may feature a one-of-a-kind colour or two. Furthermore, the camera layout may change — it did for the iPhone 13, and it may change again in 2022. According to a JP Morgan Chase investor note, Apple will make the Pro models out of a titanium alloy, which will make them stronger than previous-generation models.

Apple may also alter the iPhone lineup. According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will discontinue the "Mini" model and only offer two sizes — 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. This may still allow Apple to offer four iPhones. So there could be an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max, for example.

All of these rumours should be taken with a grain of salt. The iPhone 14 won't be released for another year, and the design is still subject to change.

iPhone 14 Specifications

The device will most likely be a spec upgrade over the iPhone 13. While the iPhone 13 uses an Apple-designed A15 Bionic chip, the next-generation device will use an A16.

The A16 was originally expected to be built on a 3nm process, but Seeking Alpha reports that TSMC has confirmed a delay in 3nm chip production. To put it another way, the 3nm process may not be available in an iPhone until the iPhone 15. If not, the iPhone 14 may still get a 4nm processor, which should provide a performance boost over the iPhone 13's 5nm chip.

It's also possible that the phone's RAM will be increased. Apple does not disclose the amount of RAM included in its iPhones. Extra RAM, on the other hand, would allow the phone to continue to multitask and support larger apps and games.

The iPhone 14's screen

With the addition of ProMotion, or a 120Hz refresh rate, to the iPhone 13 Pro models, Apple has made the most significant change to the iPhone's display in years. While initial reports suggested that the technology would be available on standard models as well, new reports from display analyst Ross Young suggest that ProMotion will only be available on the iPhone 14 Pro models. According to The Elec, Samsung and LG may both supply displays for the iPhone 14 series.

Apple may also begin to improve the iPhone's screen resolution. Most high-end phones have displays with a resolution of at least 1,440p, but the iPhone 12 still has a 1,170p display.

Touch ID on the iPhone may also make a comeback in the 2022 iPhone. According to reports, Apple intends to add in-display fingerprint sensors to the iPhone series. Early reports suggested that the technology would make its way to the iPhone 13, but that didn't happen. According to recent rumours, it will most likely be released on the iPhone 14.

Camera on iPhone 14

The iPhone 14's camera will almost certainly be improved. Apple included the larger sensor found in the iPhone 12 Pro Max in the iPhone 13 series' lower-end models. So, what do you think Apple will do in 2022? According to the latest rumours, Apple will include a 48-megapixel main camera with 8K video recording in the iPhone. The information comes from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also mentioned that the iPhone 15 series might get a periscope lens.

It's possible that Apple will add additional cameras to the iPhone 14 series. Quad camera systems have been added to the high-end phones of some smartphone manufacturers, including Samsung. It's possible that Apple will follow suit. It's possible that the lower-end devices will get a third camera, while the Pro model will get a fourth.

According to a note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the device could have 48-megapixel main cameras, a significant increase in resolution over current models' 12-megapixel cameras.

When will the iPhone 14 be released?

Because the iPhone 13 was just released, the iPhone 14 will most likely be a year away. Apple typically releases new iPhone models in September, and we don't see that changing anytime soon. As a result, the series could debut in September 2022.

But what about the costs? If Apple eliminates the "Mini" device and maintains the standard phone's pricing, we could have an iPhone for every $100 increment between $800 and $1,100. In other words, the iPhone 14 could cost $800, $900 for the iPhone 14 Max, $1,000 for the iPhone 14 Pro, and $1,100 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. But we'll have to wait and see if that's the case.
